History Backgrounds &  Story :

Raffles Hotel, more an institution than a hotel, and home of the Singapore Sling, was built towards the end of the last century by the three Sarkie brothers from Armenia. At that time the hotel occupied land which was lapped by the sea but because of constant land reclamation it is now some distance from the waterfront.

Iconic 'Traveller's Palm around the hotel entrance, including some of the courtyards! The Sg Sling originated from this hotel.  You might don't know this is Ah Longs favourite meeting place

The last restoration done to the hotel was from 1989 to 1991. It was renovated and restored to its former glory and re-open at the beginning of 1991. Since then ,it had added new wings on Stamfort & North Bridge Road side.

I recall the restoration in 1989 was challenging. Raffles Hotel was declared as a national heritage building and no hacking of any structure was allowed. The first hotel management was helmed by Jenny Chua, the GM, Richard Helfer the Executive Director, Ong Wee Hong the Financial Controller, Tan Choon Kwang, one of board member and DBS computer services headed by the late Eugene Sing was involved in automating this Grand Ol’ Dame.

It had the privilege of hosting the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew on the first day of its reopening. It was truly nostalgic as Raffles hotel is symbolic to Singapore history and heritage.

Friend  of my who are working there remember, the Exec Chef was Peter Knipp. The longest serving staff back then was Leslie Danker. Time flies!  There was empire cafe . Ah theng bakery at the corner .  he was with the pre opening team of F&B staff back in the days....

Since then ,it had added new wings on Stamfort & North Bridge Road side.Nice hotel to stay in .Free history class on a short tour of the hotel  if you stay as guest .

I remember after reopening in 1991 the new Raffles Hotel Museum was adding at 2nd floor, it showcase the Raffles Hotel legends & heritage in the pass. It's a Wonderful Museum. The Raffles Hotel heritage Museum was ceased Operation make way for new development. Any one know where they shift to?

 我记忆中在90年代2樓角头有一间洒廊 Long Bar可以喝饮料並有花生供用,花生壳可以拋在地上。

I remember that in the 90s at the corner of the 2nd floor, there was a Long Bar lounge where you could drinks and eat peanuts. The peanut shells could be thrown on the ground.

Raffles Hotel later  upgrading renovated was held on 2017 and take 2 years re-open at the 2019.
